Measure your dog first! The small is too short for my pet to lie down in, although he is only 9 pounds. The straps on the front rub his ears when he looks out the window or moves around. It tilts too much and bunches up where it rests on the seat back. The one zipper pocket is nice (three advertised) The exchange policy is ridiculous....the company will call you within 1 to 2 business to set up the exchange, and then will ship the replacement once they have received the unwanted item back! I ordered this item for a 9 hour car trip coming up this weekend. Disappointed! Poor customer service and not great marketing strategy! For Toy Breeds Only!I purchased two of these seats and was most disappointed as my Shihs' were too large even though they weigh less than the 20 pounds stated. I dreaded the thought of having to return but Amazon made that very easy. This was perfect!!!I was prepared to order this item from Amazon but then saw that the Petsmart website had it listed for 24.99. With the shipping and tax it ended up being around 30 dollars but I didn't have to wait as I would have with the "free super saver shipping" that amazon offers and that sometimes takes up to two weeks. If you had a Petsmart near you they might offer the same thing, for the same price in the store and you wouldn't have to even bother with shipping, but I was unlucky. This item worked PERFECTLY for me. I set it up in about 10 minutes at the most. Just a good look at the picture on the box is really all the instructions that you need. I just snapped and looped everything and tightened it all down after I had it set up and I found that to be a lot easier than trying to measure, tighten, and then set up. I had made my pup a blanket when he was little and I put that in the car seat to make it more snuggly and also, so that there was a familiar scent in it. We went for about a ten minute drive and he did so well!! My dog is a 6 pound pomeranian named Bruce, he is about a year old now and is very used to riding in the car but hates to be set in the front seat. Usually my fiance drives and I hold Bruce on my lap, but occasionally I take him with me someplace by myself and this is VERY hard to do. He wants to be in my lap and if I'm firm and make him sit in the passenger seat he spends the whole time slowly creeping back towards me. I am also very distracted going around sharp corners or if I have to stop suddenly. With this car seat I didn't have to worry about it at all. I only had to have a few firm words with him about staying in there and it was great. He even looked like he was getting ready to take a nap!! I would suggest when you install it to have the front of the box going slightly up hill because when you set your dog in, the weight of the dog pulls it down. Also, when your dog is first getting used to it, tipping them back towards the seat makes them feel more secure I think because it makes they want to naturally lean again the seat, which is very firm and secure feeling. It also keeps them close to the car seat restraint. The next step is to have it set up in the back seat so that he can ride in it when we are both in the car. This I think will be so nice when we are going on longer car rides. I have a Toyota Camry and the back seats fold down. I installed this car seat on the single seat that folds over - the other seat includes the center area and so is wider. This was a little harder to do - I ended up looping the bottom strap through the top strap and having to extend all of the straps a lot. The bottom strap helped to pull the top strap down to keep the seat higher up so that Bruce can look out of the window. I wasn't worried about the security of the straps once I had clicked my actual seat in my car back into place - it held everything very firmly. The strap the supports the front of the car seat I just extended all the way and was able to wrap it around the short head rest of my seat and the outside corner of the seat. With everything closed in on the straps, the whole set up stayed put and supported the car seat when I set Bruce in it. If you have a different style of car and you actually have higher head rests in the back seat, the installation is prolly going to be a TON easier. I had to improvise a lot since I had the smaller "bump" head rests. I hope that this all made sense to someone and will help them if they try to have their dog in the back seat!! I would suggest, however, to use a harness instead of a collar. Not only would this possibly be a life saver if you had to slam on your breaks (all of the force of the car stopping would be in the shoulders of the animal instead of against his tender and delicate throat area) but it also helps to keep the dog in the seat because he cannot turn around and have his head in the seat and be hanging his bottom half out. The harness generally attaches more in the middle of the back which limits movement. I would suggest tightening the restraint as short as you can have it - mine is only a few inches long and is loose if he is sitting in the seat but the second he stands up it starts pulling back. He has figured out how to turn around already however (by putting his head under the restraint) so I wouldn't worry about your pup not being able to get comfy. If you are really concerned about your pets safety I would suggest a harness especially designed for the car - they sell them in all different sizes. I found one that I really liked from petsmart that has a sheep wool material against the chest. It is about 20 dollars for the extra small. These are simply designed to distribute the force of a collision over the entire chest of the animal instead of just a few smaller areas, thus reducing the risk of broken bones etc. I hope that this review helped you decide whether you want this car seat, and that the installation instructions don't scare you off!! This really was amazing and I was VERY happy with my purchase and I would recommend this seat ot anyone!! Medium Size Barely Adaquate For Miniature SchnauzerThis is a nice Booster Seat. It is easy enough to install and remove, seems to provide reasonable protection, is attractive and well made. The problem is its size. My 25# Miniature Schnauzer barely fits in the seat. Surprisingly, he is able to lay down, but he completely fills the available space and does not look at all comfortable. We haven't yet taken a long trip, but I'm afraid the seat is just a bit too small.Fantastic for a small dog!I bought this seat for our 4 lb. 11 oz. Chihuahua as we usually had him in our lap while in the car. He took to it immediately! Now when we get in the car, he hops right up into the seat and waits for me to clip him in. We put a folded towel in the bottom of it to give him a little more cushion. He never tries to get out and curls up and goes to sleep in it within 5 minutes of getting in the car. The description says that it will hold a dog up to 20 pounds. Well........... maybe. Granted, our little guy still has plenty of room, but I can't say about the larger size dog without trying it. So for a little dog, this is perfect! Our second car is an older model that doesn't have head rests in the back seat so we had nowhere to hang the seat when we took that car. My husband solved that problem by going through the trunk and bolting a hook to the back dashboard. Works beautifully! |
